What are Bunions?
The common bunion is a localized area of enlargement or prominence of the inner portion of the joint at the base of the big toe. The augmentation actually means a misalignment of the big toe joint or in some cases, additional bone formations.
Causes of Bunions
The precise causes are seemed to be inherited factors that lead to abnormal foot functions such as overpronation that can predispose to the development of bunions. Abnormal biomechanics can lead to instability of the metatarsal phalangeal joint and muscle imbalance resulting in the deformity.Although shoe gear doesn’t directly cause a bunion, it can certainly make the bunion painful and swollen.
Symptoms of Bunions
- Buldging bump on the outside of the base of your big toe
- The skin at the base of your big toe gets thickened
- Persistent or intermittent pain
- Swelling, redness or soreness around your big toe joint
